Trump announces Venezuela agreed to send sanctioned oil to US

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Venezuela’s interim leadership had reached an agreement to hand over a large volume of oil to the United States, amounting to between 30 and 50 million barrels currently under sanctions. The oil, he said, would be sold at prevailing market rates.

"I am pleased to announce that the Interim Authorities in Venezuela will be turning over between 30 and 50 MILLION Barrels of High Quality, Sanctioned Oil, to the United States of America," Trump said in a statement posted on his social media platform.

"This Oil will be sold at its Market Price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States!" he added.

According to Trump, Energy Secretary Chris Wright had been instructed to carry out the arrangement without delay, ordering the process to begin "immediately," with the oil to be shipped on storage vessels straight to unloading facilities in the United States.

The announcement comes days after US military forces carried out extensive air operations in northern Venezuela, striking air defense positions and communication sites, while special operations units launched a raid in Caracas that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

At their initial court appearance on charges related to drugs and weapons, both Maduro and Flores rejected the accusations and entered pleas of not guilty, according to reports.

The administration has portrayed the military action as part of a renewed assertion of the Monroe Doctrine, alongside a broader campaign against alleged narcotics trafficking and corruption. Officials have also openly tied the operation to efforts aimed at strengthening US control and influence over Venezuela’s significant oil resources.
